A matter plan is a sequential list of commentary, precedents and forms required to conduct matters from file opening to closure.

Guide
|
There is one for every area of law.
|
A guide is a general term used to refer to a collection made up of a matter plan, a full commentary and precedents.
|
Publication
|
May have several guides.
|
A publication describes the suite included in that area of law. For example, the publication Conveyancing includes two guides being Purchase of Land and Sale of Land.

Full commentary
|
Every guide has one.
|
A full commentary is an examination of the law and practice in each area of law and is set out following the matter plan sequence. It contains links to applicable legislation, important cases and government websites.

Reference manual
|
These are less common and evolve as the By Lawyers publication library matures.
|
Reference manuals are more in-depth examinations of the law and practice in each practice area and for ease of use are set out alphabetically.

Example content
|
Found in a matter plan.
|
Example content precedents set out various scenarios that the user can then cut and paste into the relevant form and adapt to suit their circumstance, for example, a Library of events for a Statement of Claim.

Library
|
Found in a matter plan.
|
A Library is a collection of precedents, for example, a Library of consent orders provides lesser used orders that may be required.
|
If required
|
Found in a matter plan.
|
If required refers to a folder of documents that may or may not be required during the conduct of a matter. For example, when acting on a sale a library special condition may be required.

Legal Guides tab
|
The Legal Guides tab is on the Guides & Precedents screen in a LEAP matter.
|
The Legal Guides tab is used to access the By Lawyers guide for the matter. It shows the interactive matter plan which provides access to the commentary and precedents.

Browse tab
|
The Browse tab is on the Guides & Precedents screen in a LEAP matter.
|
The Browse tab has a link to the Legal Guides tab as well as a list of the By Lawyers precedents. It does not provide access to commentary.
The Browse tab also provides access to LEAP forms and a firm’s precedents. |
Alert
|
Found at the top of a matter plan and at the top of commentary.
|
An Alert is an urgent ‘notice’ to the reader that something important has changed. It might be legislative or a change in practice and procedure. Alerts are brief but informative, for example, ALERT – From 1 April 2020 the filing fees for probate applications increase from $5 to $70.
If there is no alert, it will show as NIL. |
